All Authority

September 6, 2026

Who’s in charge?

“Jesus is Lord … until I disagree.”

  • Until His Word disagrees with my opinion.
  • Until obedience costs me my comfort.
  • Until His design confronts my sexual desires.
  • Until He tells me that relationship has to change.
  • Until His Kingdom gets into my bank account.
  • Until He tells me to forgive the person I’d rather stay bitter toward.
  • Until His plan interrupts the future I planned for myself.
If Jesus only gets the final word when I agree with Him I’m still in charge.
Before Satan tempted humanity to break God’s command he tempted humanity to question God’s authority.

MATTHEW’S THREAD OF JESUS’ AUTHORITY

Matthew 7:29 — He TAUGHT with authority.
→ Matthew 8:27 — The WIND AND WAVES OBEYED Him.
→ Matthew 9:6 — He had authority to FORGIVE SINS.
→ Matthew 10:1 — He had authority to GIVE AUTHORITY to His disciples.
→ Matthew 16:13-19 — Jesus has AUTHORITY OVER HIS CHURCH.

16The eleven disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw Him, they worshiped, but some doubted. 18Jesus came near and said to them, ‘All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.’” Matthew 28:16-18 (CSB)

EXOUSIA → AUTHORITY - RIGHT - JURISDICTION - RULE

The legitimate right to command, govern, and exercise authority.

15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together. 18He is also the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He might come to have first place in everything.” Colossians 1:15-18 (CSB)

His Authority Demands a Response:

#1 - Get Off The Throne

YOU DON’T GIVE JESUS AUTHORITY. YOU SURRENDER TO THE AUTHORITY HE ALREADY HAS.

#2 - Bow The Knee

16The eleven disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw Him, they worshiped, but some doubted.” Matthew 28:16-17 (CSB)

9For this reason God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow—in heaven and on earth and under the earth—11and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11 (CSB)

THE QUESTION ISN’T WHETHER YOU WILL BOW. THE QUESTION IS WHEN.

THE HANDS THAT HOLD ALL AUTHORITY ARE THE HANDS THAT WERE PIERCED FOR YOU.

#3 - Take Up Your Cross

24Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it.’” Matthew 16:24-25 (CSB)

JESUS DIDN’T SAY CUSTOMIZE YOUR DISCIPLESHIP.

#4 - Obey Your King

19Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 (CSB)

BECAUSE JESUS IS KING, HIS WORD IS NOT ADVICE. IT IS AUTHORITY.

The One who has all authority is the One who is always with us.
